Prime Directives of Unconscious Mind

By: Lenka Majstrikova

The unconscious mind is that part of our mind that we are not aware of right now. It is often referred to as intuition, subconscious mind pre-conscious mind, or personal habit.

It is the control centre of all your involuntary body functions (heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure, etc.) and the collection of memories of everything that you have ever experienced in your life. Moreover, it is the collection of thoughts, beliefs and convictions you have ever formed, based upon these experiences. Apart from being "just" a collection, your subconscious mind is also the frame of reference for making decisions in the future. You base your actions on the beliefs you hold, and on all that which you have experienced before.

Ability to communicate with our own unconscious mind has unlimited benefits to our own life, satisfaction and performance. It makes many things easier for us. By understanding our unconscious mind and being able to communicate with it, we can achieve things that we want to achieve really easily.

You can compare yourself to a ship. Your conscious mind is the captain of the ship, giving orders, and directing the ship to its destination. Your unconscious mind is the crew of the ship. It follows the orders, without question.
And it will carry out any order over and over, until it is withdrawn, or a new order is given.

Unconscious mind, in fact, controls our life, unless we learn how to master it. Depending on our relationship and “programming” of unconscious mind, we are more or less energetic, more or less happy, more or less successful…

Let’s have a look at what exactly our unconscious mind does for us:

The Prime Directives of Unconscious Mind

  1. Is the domain of the emotions

Your beliefs about "things" create your response to that "thing" happening. It either gives you a pleasurable feeling, or a painful feeling.
Hence by communication with our unconscious mind we can control our emotions really easily.

  1. Stores and Organizes all your memories
The unconscious mind uses time line for storage and organisation of our memories. During our Ultimate NLP Practitioner® training we teach our students how to use the concept of the time line to be able to let go off all negative emotions and limiting decisions from the past. This prime directive also assists us in creating our goals in a way that their realisation becomes inevitable. We teach our students how to insert the desired outcome into the specified date on their time line, hence RAS part of our brain helps us immensely to achieve this goal.
  1. Represses memories with unresolved negative emotion

When we are not ready to deal with certain event or events, we consciously try not to think about it. Our unconscious mind, however, never forget what ever happened. These repressed memories are stored in our unconsciousness, often influencing the way we feel and act on every day basis.

  1. Presents repressed memories for resolution.

Often, long forgotten memories and issues just 'pop out'. This is when unconscious mind seeks resolution for these past events.

  1. Runs the body

Our unconscious mind takes care of every breath we take, every blink of our eyes and the stream of blood in our veins. It is responsible for our heart rate, metabolic rate and much more. It is really easy to control our metabolic rate when we know how to communicate with our unconscious mind

  1. Preserves the body

Unconscious Mind maintains the integrity of the body.

  1. Is a highly moral being

It has the morality you were taught and accepted. This means that even when you are in altered state of consciousness (e.g. experiencing hypnosis), you would never do what is not aligned fully with your values.

  1. Enjoys serving, needs clear orders to follow

Our unconscious mind listens to us at all times! What suggestions are you giving? In one day we think more than 60 000 thoughts – and every thought is a suggestion to our unconscious mind. What suggestions are you giving to yourself?

  1. Controls and maintain all perceptions

Have you ever liked someone from the first instance and had no idea why? Most of the communication happens on unconscious level and when you have a 'gut feeling' about somebody, it is coming from your unconscious mind. Often, we cannot describe these feelings and perceptions by words.

  1. Maintains instincts and generate habits

With the help of our unconscious mind we can change any habit easily.

  1. Is programmed to continually seek more and more
Because there is always more to discover.
  1. Functions best as a whole integrated unit

Our unconscious mind does not need parts to function. This means that if you have any internal conflicts, such as “sometimes I think I can succeed and sometimes I think I can’t”, these conflicts prevent us from being the way we want to be. During our Practitioner course we teach our students how to let go of these conflicts. All NLP techniques are designed to increase wholeness.

  1. Is symbolic

It uses and responds to symbols. This is why imaginary works. It doesn’t recognise between fantasy and reality. It thinks in pictures.

  1. Takes everything personally.

This is the basis of perception is projection, first introduced by Carl Jung. Understanding this concept will allow you to project, hence perceive, only positive people, things and events in your life.

  1. Works on the principle of least effort

It uses the path of least resistance to get what we want. It is extremely important to set yourself goals, either personal or business, in a way that are very specific and can overcome this rule.

  1. Does not process negatives

This is probably the most important prime directive of unconscious mind. Your unconscious mind doesn't recognise between 'Don't forget' and 'Forget'. To your unconscious mind, these two are very much same suggestions. Remember - always say it the way you want it! Avoid using ‘not, don’t,’ and similar words, because these simply don't deliver results you want.
