NLP Tips

Check what you believe in!

Back when I first started to learn NLP, I was struck by the awesome power of changing a single belief. During the NLP Practitioner course I let go of belief that I wasn't good enough and since then my life has never been the same.

Our lives and results are driven by beliefs we hold about ourselves and it is your responsibility to keep an eye on holding the most empowering beliefs.

Change a single belief about yourself this month that will influence the next months in the most productive way!

How do you do this?

1. Identify a limiting belief that you would like to change.

We all got them. Examples I've come across include:

"I can never succeed."
"I will always be depressed."
"I will always be fat."
"I always struggle financially."
"Attractive men are not interested in me."

2. Construct a positive affirmation using the following formula: I am xxx.

Power affirmations based on the list from the above would be:

"I am incredibly successful."
"I am happy and full of joy."
"I am slim, fit and healthy."
"I am wealthy and always have surplus of money."
"I attract attractive men."

I know what you're thinking: that's not reality. Yet, the same was probably true of the limiting belief when you first started affirming it. It takes time for a belief to put down roots, so something you can do to plant it in your unconscious mind and help it to grow is the third step.

3. Say your new affirmation, notice what thoughts and feelings are triggered and accept them.

The first time you say your new affirmation, it will not seem 'true' to you (if it does, fantastic!)  It is likely that you'll have certain sensations and thoughts, so allow yourself to be aware of any pictures that pop into your mind, voices in your head, and feelings in your body. Of all of these, it is usually the feelings that keep an old belief in place and that push against the new one coming in. But you can relax - you don't have to fight those feelings; just accept them.

4. Reinforce your new beliefs by repeating your new affirmation daily, allowing yourself to feel how you would feel when it's true and noticing proof that supports it.

You can do number of things to reinforce your new belief, including:

- Writing it out daily
- Saying it aloud whilst looking in a mirror
- Imagine how you'd feel when it is already true and feel that way already

This may not be the most elegant approach to belief change, but it does have a major advantage over some other approaches: it's simple and it works!

To your success,

Lenka
