Let’s face it: You are responsible for where you are today!
By: Lenka Majstrikova

For a majority of my life I was extremely good at worrying and complaining. I could not understand how it was possible that in spite of my greatest efforts and ‘trying’, all I was getting was an endless chain of bad luck.

I would often cry and feel helpless, I wanted much more for me and my family and often thought; ‘Well, maybe it just not meant to be.‘

Then one day someone came and told me: “Let’s face it. You are responsible for where you are today!”

My initial tendency at the time was to think; ‘How dare you? It’s not my fault that I’m not getting what I deserve!’ I let the statement sink in and it was only a after few hours when I finally got it.

Understanding this statement fully has significantly changed the course of the future events in my life!

The presupposition that we are in charge of our brain and thus in charge of our results is cited by Robert Dilts as one of the key ideas underpinning NLP.

The idea that accepting 100 % responsibility is extremely useful goes back far beyond NLP.

William James, known as a father of scientific psychology, used to be puzzled about whether we truly have a genuine free will, or whether our lives are results of genetic and environmental consequences.

After some time he realised that this question is simply insolvable. What he discovered was, that it didn’t matter which statement was true, but rather what one person chose to accept as a true. He found that people who take 100 % responsibility for their results and believe that they can determine their future, were far happier and successful than those who believed in determinism.

There are thousands of people out there blaming bad luck, blaming bad economy, blaming other people and lack of opportunity for where they are today. They remain unaware of the tremendous power they already possess – the power that can alter their current situation.

Taking absolute responsibility for where you are today is incredibly empowering.

Once you accept that it is you who is responsible for your own reality, soon you will realise that you have power to change this reality to anything you want.

You see, our mind listens to each of our thoughts and acts on it. According to research we think daily no less than 60 000 thoughts. This means that we give our mind over 60 thousands orders every single day.
If you think worry and complain, that is what your unconscious mind hears and acts on  – ‘Aah, let’s get more of it’

If you think about debts and financial worries, your mind will listen – and get you more debts and financial worries!

You always get what you focus on.

Who you are today, what you have today and what you do today, is a result of all the thoughts that you thought over the years. Those thoughts created a predominant frame of mind and your mind continually seeks for more events, people, things and circumstances that will fit into this frame.

You are a living magnet.

Taking a full responsibility for your current results and accepting your current situation is the very first step towards success, whatever success means to you.
It may sound paradoxical, yet full acceptance of your current situation acts as an accelerator of your future success.

It is far too easy to kick yourself for what you have not achieved until now and you should. It is quite easy to be unhappy about what you currently have or don’t have.

If you can accept where you are today and are grateful for all the things you have and achieved so far, you will start sending positive suggestions to your unconscious mind.

The fact is, you have hundreds of reasons to be grateful for. You are reading this, hence I assume you have a sight. What a gift!

You are reading this, so you have access to a computer. There are millions of people out there who haven’t seen PC in their life!

Comparing yourself to supper successful people from the media is not useful. You can only assume their true levels success and happiness. Compare your current situation to people living 200 or 300 years ago. The chances are that you are probably 100 times richer and more successful than the majority of people living then.

Feeling of gratefulness is incredibly powerful and sends orders to our unconscious mind to create more opportunities to be grateful for.

So go ahead. Write down as many reasons to be incredibly grateful right now, as you can.

-Be grateful for your home.
-Be grateful for people you love.
-Be grateful for all the good things available to you.
-Be grateful for your body.
-Be grateful for everything that is to come.

Do this exercise often and start noticing how you attract more people, things, circumstances and opportunities to be grateful for!
