Always say it the way you want it
If you tell someone not to do something, their tendency will be to do just the opposite. This is because of our mind does not process negatives.
Let's think about it - if I asked you NOT to think of a blue tree, what would you be thinking of?
Blue tree.
Of course, because in order not to think about something, your mind needs to find a symbolic representation of it first.
Here are just a few examples of (admittedly) my own misuse of the negative language:
* Once I told to one of my employees: "Don't forget to bring that important file tomorrow." .....yes, he forgot.
* When standing at a pedestrian crossing with my little brother I told him, "Don't cross the road now!" ...Yes, he almost jumped right into the stream of traffic!
* When using the London Underground I was reading a sign by the escalator saying, "Do not press this button" - ..... No, I didn't press it, however, I had to fight myself not to!
Sounds familiar?
Pay attention to what you are saying. Our language influences others all the times. In the way you want...or not.
Learn how to reframe any negative statement you are about to say to the positive one. This extremely effective exercise may seem too simplistic at first, yet what you'll find is that it is a real skill to do it properly at all times!
Have fun with it!... and notice how others suddenly just want to listen to you... :-)
